Car selfies; a growing safety concern (the new duckface)

LA Distracted Driving

If you log onto any photo sharing social network and look up #carselfie you will be confronted with an infinitely endless stream of people taking very dangerous self photos of themselves while driving. This is highly illegal and extremely dangerous to do but very few people have raised the alarm bells of how dangerous this growing trend really is.

“Taking a photo of yourself while you’re driving a 2,000-pound vehicle down the road at 50 or 60 miles per hour? That is putting your life in danger and putting the lives of those around you in danger,” said Jackie Gillan, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety.

According to AAA federal estimates suggest that distraction contributes to 16% of all fatal crashes, leading to around 5,000 deaths every year. There is no specific number of how many of those involved car selfies but a recent accident shines light on the consequences of driving while distracted after an aspiring rapper tweets YOLO (you only live once) and dies in an auto accident shortly after, killing all 4 passengers in his car.

Selfies themselves are particularly vain but when someone is putting their vanity before their own safety and the safety of others there is serious problem. When you really think about it car selfes are stupid…more stupid than duckface:
